Tony Daniel on One Year Later

DRAWING THINGS TOGETHER ONE YEAR LATER: DANIEL TALKS "TEEN TITANS"
by Dave Richards, Staff Writer
Posted: March 30, 2006

comicbookresources.com talks with Titans artist, Tony Daniel.

"The emotional level of "Teen Titans" will be heightened during "One Year Later" by appearances from a number of characters, many of whom will be sporting new looks courtesy of Daniel. "So far with the first arc, I've been drawing the Brotherhood of Evil and the Doom Patrol," Daniel stated. "All of the Doom Patrol has been redesigned and so have the Brotherhood of Evil. So, I've already been able to put my stamp on some of these characters and feel at home with them. There are also some new villains Geoff created for the Brotherhood. It's been a lot of fun for me. I've also redesigned all of the Teen Titans, eccept for Cyborg, but I'm still trying to see if I can tweak him down the road. Kid Devil is a new character. We worked together to find the right look for him. I think he'll grow on people quickly."

Daniel is also very excited for the artistic opportunities coming his way in future "Titans" stories. "I'm definitely looking forward to the 'Titans East' storyline," he said. "I pretty much know all the members and it'll be a lot of fun for me to work on. There's also an addition to the team later this year that should have everyone flipping over. And I really can't wait for that."

Titans in Bludhaven?

The Pulse reports on the upcoming Battle for Bludhaven: "The city of Bludhaven is struggling to rebuild after the devastation wrought upon it in the aftermath of events from the Infinite Crisis. Writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, two of the architects responsible for how the city will pan out in the pages of the Crisis Aftermath The Battle for Bludhaven, gave us some teasers about what to expect in this six-part tale."

THE PULSE: OK, I know you don't want to give away any spoilers, but what else will you tell PULSE readers about this tale to tempt them to check it out?

GRAY: Are there any Teen Titans fans out there? If you’re an old school DC fan you’re going to be bombarded with some great geek out moments. If you’re new to the DCU, you’re going to find an action packed mystery adventure comic.

PALMIOTTI: All that and Dan Jurgens is busting his ass to make this book look great. Fun story, cool art and insight into the DCU … what more could you want?

Donna Troy Hits 52

Newsarama reports: "Now coming full circle back to DC, [Dan] Jurgens is writing and drawing a backup feature for DC’s ground breaking weekly 52 title. Starting with the second issue, “History of the DC Universe” will be presented in weekly 4 page installments for 10 weeks."

Dan Jurgens explains: "What we’re going to do is try to give everyone a feel for what the DC Universe was, the changes that its gone through and maybe hint at where a couple of things are going as see through the eyes of Donna Troy. She’s a character who is out there now that has connections to so many realities if you will, that have occurred throughout the DCU. It’s through her eyes that we can show everybody this is the DCU before the crisis ever occurred. This is kind of happened in and around the Crisis and this how Zero Hour affected it. Because so many readers are new to the whole thing, we can kind of take them [and older readers at the same time] through what it the DC universe was, and hopefully will be in the context of these 10 stories. "

Newsarama also asked: "One final question Dan, since Donna Troy is the main character, will she be known as the new ‘Harbinger,’ since the original Harbinger from Crisis on Infinite Earths is now dead?"

Jurgens replies: "We’ll leave that one alone for right now."

Geoff Johns Teases One Year Later

News from Newsarama: DC held their final program of the WWLA weekend, their DCU – One Year Greater panel. As has been the recurring theme for the show, a lot of the information and even Q&A exchanges had a familiar ring to them for readers who have followed the coverage of WonderCon and the New York Comic-Con over the last seven weeks, but here some brief highlights…

"Johns said he wants to open the OYL Teen Titans series with “20 different mysteries” about how the team got to their OYL status and roster."

"The main Teen Titans team will still be located on the West Coast, but obviously Titans East will be on the opposite Coast. Johns called the team juvenile delinquents who will be causing trouble and he described one character as who he believes will be the first white trash superhero."

The Q&A then moved to the lightning round...

"Is Wonder Girl pregnant? Johns: “Wasn’t me”."

"Asked if Damage will be the new Human Bomb, Johns said no, but that there are plans for Damage upcoming."

"Will Connor Kent survive Crisis? “Next question”."

Tony Daniel on One Year Later

Tony Daniel has updated his blog with more news and sketches about the upcoming One Year Leap!

Tony on Kid Devil: "Welcome the newest Teen Titan, Kid Devil. I won't say too much about him until you guys start reading the issues with him in it. But Geoff and I re-created this character specifically for the Teen Titans. As the image shows, the character has issues. What are they? Find out in the first arc of Teen Titans OYL."

Tony on Ravager: "So there's still not a lot I can show for fear of Spoilers, but this is pretty harmless. It's a smaller panel with Ravager. I wanted her to look sexy and seductive, yet still look like she'll slit your throat when you turn around. She does wear a mask, but in these images that we've leaked, we wanted to show her face. Teen Titans 34 is coming soon and we're all looking forward to it."

"Issue 34 was a new starting point for me. I wanted to do something different with my style, but just didn't know what. It's hard to shake your 'style.' It took months of hard work for me to learn a new way of interpreting my vision. Even 34 isn't totally there yet. You'll see where things start to look a bit more realistic perhaps. With the strong words of encouragement from Geoff Johns and editor, Eddie Berganza, all were on board with the new look."

From the comic book version (Young Justice) to the animated version (Teen Titans Go!). Last month, he returned to the Teen Titans where he pitted Superboy [Conner Kent] against Superboy Prime, showing a more detailed picture of the fight from the perspective of the Teen Titans. New York ComiCon 2006 Report

Well, the smoke has cleared from the first-ever New York ComiCon 2006.

Friday was fairly busy, but certainly not a harbinger for what Saturday would bring. Alas, it was too late to snag a sketch from Jose Garcia-Lopez, but I did manage to get a Wonder Girl sketch from the talented Olivier Copiel, who was doing sketches for those patient enough to wait.

I checked out the DC booth to see what books were available for preview. Sadly, no Teen Titans to be seen in the previews; Geoff Johns tells me every page is spoilery. I did check out Outsiders and the Batman Annual, which by now, have been read by the general public. I managed to see the Teen Titans Go! Team, writer J Torres and artists Mike Norton and Todd Nauck. Sketches scored! Look for a buncha Titanic guest stars coming up in the Titans Go comic!

Saturday was a breeze to get in for me with my badge from yesterday. But many others were not as lucky; It appears that the con had to turn away somewhere around 6,000 people at the door! People also had trouble reentering the show if they left for lunch, bathroom or what have you. All a learning experience, it seems. The people running the show vow to have more space next year. I guess we know the show is a success!

Saturday was, of course, the busiest day of the show. I managed to get a Superboy sketch from the always delightful Phil Jimenez; As a bonus, I had the piece inked by Andy Lanning [Phil's usual inker]. My proudest piece from the con! Andy was charging a fee, but donating all proceeds to the fund for Jeph Loeb's son, Sam. Nice gesture by Andy.

Scored some more sketches Saturday, including a nifty Ravager sketch by the ever-reliable Andy MacDonald of NYC Mech fame and a Cheshire sketch by Dale [Villians United] Eaglesham.

Attendees of the First Annual New York Comic Convention were invited to attend the Indie After Party on Saturday February 25th from 8-11 pm at The Twins Pub in New York City. The party took place on the entire upstairs level of the bar and will featured free food, cash bar and comics for sale. Neat idea! Cool hanging out with the creators of such books at Sentinels and Quantum: Rock of Ages.

I also met some of the nice folks from the geoffjohns.com message boards, who were meeting for drinks at the nearby TGIFridays. Colin Solan became my sketch-shadow all weekend as we sought artists for our sketchbooks [or, was I his sketch-shadow?]; I ran into fellow George Perez devotee Erik Sellers; And the message board mod "Captain Dallas" [or, Keith in his civvies] was jokingly moderating the table.

Geoff Johns himself stopped by after his DC dinner and took some time to have some drinks with us. We chatted Crisis, Titans and comics in general. Geoff always tries to make time for his fans; The Geoff-fan-hour sessions have become something of a con tradition. Cheers, Geoff.

Sunday was a sketch collection day. Got some stuff from the guys at Udon Studios. Got a coupla pieces from talented guys like Khary Randolph and Brad Silverman. All in all, a great New York Comicon! Look forward to next year!

So you wanna see sketches?? Well, check out the recently-retooled titanstower.com gallery. And to see the New York ComiCon sketches, check out this page.
