SDCC 2008: Robin by Gordon Purcell

Here's a Robin piece from Gordon Purcell, who was signing at the HERO Initiative booth. Gordon reminded me he did some issues of ROBIN as well as BATTLE FOR BLUDHAVEN, so I had him draw Tim Drake. This came out quite nice!

SDCC 2008: Wednesday & Thursday

I arrived in San Diego on Wednesday to check out Preview Night, which is becoming more than a quick inside peek at the con floor. The convention was packed, once again showing that this con grows more each passing year.

Without any panels on Wednesday, the floor was the focus, and at its peak, you'd think it was Saturday afternoon out there. It definitely foreshadowed the next 4 days of lines and crowds... And more lines.

Thursday was a little more "Normal." I didn't attend too many panels, but I did get a chance to see the con floor. I also volunteered for The HERO Initiative, a very worthwhile charity that helps creators in need. I was also able to score a sketch from Gordon Purcell.

I came across the booth for a series called "Love and Capes", a heroically super romantic comedy situation comedy in comic book form from Thom Zahler. I liked it so much I went back and bought all 7 issues. Check it out!

I caught the panel which premiered Lionsgate/Marvel: Hulk vs. Wolverine. There is a full report here.

The DTV movie is action-packed and rather violent. It also features Sabretooth, Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike, and Deadpool as agents of Weapon X. As you might imagine, Deadpool really adds a lot of humor and life to the movie. I encourage Wolvie fans to check it out!

Later, a caught part of the fun Ed Brubaker panel, where it was entertaining to see the writer explain his work in his own words. I then caught the panel for Twomorrows Publishing, where Keith Dallas was there to promote The Flash Companion (a book that I designed). The book just hit the stands this July, and I urge people to check it out! Mark Waid himself bought it (he couldn't wait for his comp copy to arrive) and gave it two thumbs up.

I later caught the informative panels for "The Pitching Hour" and " So You Want to Do a Graphic Novel". And then it was off to the Hyatt bar for drinks and socializing. There, I caught up with Amy Wolfram (Teen Titans: Year One) and Thom Zahler (Love and Capes). If you aren't reading Teen Titans: Year One, I don't think you can rightfully call yourself a Titans fan! I also geeked out on Titans, Spider-man (and more) with Phil Jimenez. Spidey fans should check out the current Kraven storyline, because it'll knock you for a loop once its done!

SDCC 2008: Spotlight on Geoff Johns

Comic Book Resources Reports
on the Spotlight on Geoff Johns Panel. Here's some Titans-centric highlights: "Waiting for the panel's gargantuan line of attendees to completely make its way into room 5AB, Johns kicked things off with a series of questions that each garnered applause: "Did anybody read ‘Teen Titans’ when I was on? Does anybody like Bart Allen?" After handing a free Flash comic to a fan wearing a Flash T-shirt, he added, "Does anybody miss Bart Allen?" When the subsequent ovation died down, he cryptically replied, "Good.""

"
Johns demurred when fans asked how it felt to run the DC Universe or if "fixing" the DCU was his "plan," saying he simply tries to put out the best quality books that he can, though he does love DC and hopes to be there a long time. "If I can work on Flash and Green Lantern and Legion and Batman and JSA and Teen Titans, I'd be a happy man." He said his primary focus when writing is to focus on the character."

"
Regarding his writing process, Johns said it all comes down to character. "With 'Flash: Rebirth,' I look at Barry and Wally and focuses on what am I going to say and how can I challenge them the most.""

"
"Final Crisis: Rogues' Revenge" was the topic of the next question. Were the Rogues' statements that they didn't mean to kill Bart Allen a retcon on Johns's part, or a self-justification on the part of the Rogues themselves? Johns said it was a bit of both, and that more will be revealed regarding their motivations in the next two issues of the series. Arguing that the Rogues had gone in an "out of character" direction after his departure from "The Flash," Johns said he thought they'd be smart enough to know that killing a Flash would bring down a lot of heat, which it did. "They got sent to a planet - which was bizarre," he quipped, referring to “Salvation Run.” However, Johns expressed doubt that the Rogues truly feel remorse for the death of Bart as opposed to a hero with whom they had a more lasting relationship, like Barry Allen - here, they mostly feel bad about being caught. Johns teased that we would soon discover that one of the Rogues actually **was** trying to kill Bart."

"
One wondered why it was the right time for Barry Allen to come back, since his death was such a tremendous moment - and a tremendous boon to his successor, Wally West, a favorite of many Flash fans. "Barry agrees," Johns said, explaining that "The Flash: Rebirth" is truly about Allen wondering why he deserves to be back."

"
A pair of questions about the "The Flash: Rebirth" followed, prompting Johns to say that the series would explore the Speed Force, but that he could not reveal anything about Bart Allen's involvement in the series - including whether it would delve into the years he spent trapped in the Speed Force during his battle with Superboy-Prime - at this time."

"
When a fan said how much he liked Superboy-Prime, Johns said he did too. "I like Prime because I hate him." Johns said while working on "Legion of Three Worlds," he wrote a scene in which Prime walks through a 31st century neighborhood where a dog-walking robot greets the villain while his dog barks at him. After seeing Pèrez's art for the scene, Johns decided to add a line and have Prime say "Shut up, dog!""

"
Will we see Wally's kids in the series? Again, Johns said he couldn't answer, but that he's seen what Van Sciver has done with the kids and the results will make us "freak out." "Our goal is to make you like them - if that's possible," he added. Van Sciver replied that if we don't, they could be made into Black Lanterns. "It's like a waste disposal unit comics!" he said of the all-dead Lantern Corps."

"
Johns ended the panel by thanking the attendees - "I love my job and I wouldn't have it if it weren't for you guys." Sattler gave everyone in attendance a parting gift of promotional Flash rings, leaving Johns with one final quip: "There's no costumes in them, though.""

SDCC 2008: Judas Contract DTV Dead

Newsarama reports: "DC gave fans a brief first glimpse at its upcoming “Wonder Woman” animated feature, kicking off a discussion with fans at the San Diego Comic-Con in which fans and panelists talked about which characters they’d next like to see come to DVD."

"[...] A long-discussed adaptation of “Teen Titans: The Judas Contract” is on hold, Noveck says, because fan support hasn’t been broad enough to vault it past other titles. "

"Levitz says the key to the success of these DVDs is whether they can sell a couple hundred thousand copies in the first couple of weeks — they have to do the kind of business to make it worth it for outlets like Wal-Mart and Target to carry them. Still, it’s a building process and if these discs continually sell well, it makes it easier to experiment with lesser-known characters and storylines."

I asked Bruce Timm about the status of TEEN TITANS: JUDAS CONTRACT, and he said it didn't ever make it past script development. Sadly, it sound like there are absolutely no plans for this one!

SDCC 2008: John & Van Skiver on Barry's Return

Newsarama Reports: " In one of the most anticipated announcements out of San Diego Comic-Con for comic book fans, DC Comics announced on Thursday that a mini-series early next year called The Flash: Rebirth will re-introduce the once-dead character Barry Allen, bringing the previous Flash back for good into the fictional world he left more than 20 years ago.

Written by Geoff Johns with art by Ethan Van Sciver, the previously-unnamed comic book project had been teased for months by the two top-name creators, who orchestrated a similar return of formerly-deceased Green Lantern Hal Jordan in the 2005 comic series Green Lantern: Rebirth. The return of Hal Jordan under the hands of Johns and Van Sciver marked a dramatic resurgence of the Green Lantern comic book, with the title now ranking as one of DC's best-selling comics.

News of Barry Allen's return to the DC Universe was initially reported in the New York Daily News in April, but his "return" was seen by many fans as probably being temporary, since the character has time-traveled into DC Comics quite a few times since his death. But this announcement today indicates comic book readers better get used to seeing a new Flash around, and the two guys who revived Green Lantern will be the ones bringing him back for good."

NRAMA: Flash is a favorite character for you guys, isn't he?

GJ: The Flash is my favorite character.

EVS: Flash has always been my favorite DC character too. Always. I was brought into the Green Lantern Universe after I'd worked at DC. And that was a happy accident. But Flash was always my favorite.

GJ: His book was one of the first comics I ever collected. And I love Wally West, obviously. I wrote him for five years. I love everything about the Flash Universe. I love all the Flashes. But the Flash Universe is my favorite place in the DC Universe.

Read it all here....

SDCC 2008: DC Panel Brings Titans News

Newsarama reports from San Diego: "Saturday afternoon’s “DC: A Guide to Your Universe” panel at Comic-Con International promised a few new announcements from the publisher."

>> "How many people are fans of the Milestone characters?" DiDio asked. "Well guess what? We're going to be bringing the Milestone characters into the DC Universe proper," said DiDio, mentioning characters like Icon, and saying that Static will be joining the Teen Titans.

>> Will the Milestone characters origins change? "We want them just the way they are," said DiDio.

>> DiDio brought out Brad Meltzer to discuss DC Universe: Last Will and Testament. "There are hints about where the DCU is headed," said Meltzer, repeating his comments from yesterday about the one-shot dealing with DC characters spending what they believe to be their last night on Earth. "You'll also see that one you face death, I believe, you try to find answers. Some people seek love, and some people seek the family, and some people seek drink, and some people seek sex. I can tell you for sure that Geo-Force tries to seek revenge on Deathstroke for killing his sister."

>> Titans writer Judd Winick joined the panel, teasing "I can tell you nothing" about the book. "We have an upcoming arc involving every character that has been done a Titan. So how do you like them apples?"

>> Any chance for a new Deathstroke ongoing series? "As anyone who saw in Identity Crisis, I love Deathstroke," said Meltzer, continuing to speak about the character's role in Last Will and Testament. "I actually asked Dan months ago if we can take him out of the DCU so we can do something really spectacular with him. You never really get to see his motivation, or what's going on with him, but you're going to see that with Last Will and Testament."

>> Will Damage "get his face back"? "He's just going through the first leg of his story," said Johns, saying he really liked the character.

SDCC 2008: Johns & Van Skiver Announce FLASH: REBIRTH

Comic Book Resources reports the worst-kept secret in comic-dom:

We are loath to use the phrase, "because you demanded it," but come on.

Geoff Johns. Ethan Van Sciver. "The Flash: Rebirth."

Really, Mr. Johns, you had us at, "Hello."

Announced today at Comic-Con, the superstar writer told CBR News that he and Van Sciver have a simple goal for the five-issue miniseries "The Flash: Rebirth," scheduled to start in January.

"We want to do for Flash what we managed to do for Green Lantern," said Johns, who wrote the bestselling Van Sciver-penciled "Green Lantern: Rebirth" in 2005 and its sequel "Sinestro Corps War" in 2007.

TEEN TITANS: TROUBLE IN TOKYO ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK
TO BE RELEASED BY LA-LA LAND RECORDS

(July 15, 2008- Burbank, CA) – La-La Land Records will release the soundtrack for TEEN TITANS: TROUBLE IN TOKYO on July 29. Cartoon Network’s Teen Titans series airs around the world. TROUBLE IN TOKYO was a direct-to-video film released on DVD in 2007. The music was composed by the Emmy® winning team Dynamic Music Partners.

Dynamic Music Partners are a three-person team of composers Michael McCuistion, Lolita Ritmanis, and Kristopher Carter.

Lolita Ritmanis is a nine time Emmy Award®-nominated composer, having won in 2002 for her work on the animated series Batman Beyond. She is currently working on The Spectacular Spider-Man and Ben 10: Alien Force. Lolita has worked as an orchestrator for composers Michael Kamen, Basil Poledouris, Mark Snow and Shirley Walker, on over 100 films, mini-series and television programs, including Lethal Weapon 4, X-Files Movie, Swimfan, Robin Hood-Prince of Thieves, Final Destination and The West Wing.

Michael McCuistion is an Emmy® Award-winning composer who has been working in film and television for over 15 years. Nominated for nine Emmy Awards® and two Annie® Awards, he has also composed and conducted the music for the Oscar-winning short film My Mother Dreams The Satan’s Disciples In New York, Activision’s Spider-Man: The Movie Game and Spider-Man 2: The Game which were released simultaneously with both blockbuster motion pictures. McCuistion is currently composing for The Spectacular Spider-Man and Ben 10: Alien Force.

Kristopher Carter began his career as one of the youngest composers to work for Warner Bros. He received an Emmy Award® for Batman Beyond, as well as six other Emmy® nominations. His fifteen independent feature films have screened at many prestigious international festivals. He made his Hollywood Bowl debut in 2001 with a commission from John Mauceri and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. In the record world he has collaborated with the Wallflower's Rami Jaffee and blues guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

When a high-tech ninja from the Far East attacks Titans Tower, Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Raven, and Beast Boy spring into action and bring him down. But when Robin finds out the ninja was sent by a mysterious and menacing Japanese criminal known as Brushogun ... our heroes realize that the action isn't over -- it's just getting started. So the Titans pack their bags, hop in the T-Ship, and take off for Tokyo on a mission to track down Brushogun -- and bring him to justice. But can our teenage heroes stay out of trouble in the City That Never Blinks? And can Robin solve the mystery of Brushogun before our villain takes down the Titans -- and destroys everything Robin is?

The composers commented, “Since this journey would be grander in scope than the weekly series, we knew our score would need to reflect that. Watching the characters explore their new surroundings, experience an unfamiliar culture and learn things about each other along the way (with occasional tributes to Japanese monster movies!) all provided a wonderful environment for musical inspiration.”

“Lolita, Kris and Michael did such an amazing job creating and crafting such original music for such a wonderful score. Without them the pictures would seem very lifeless and dull,” said producer Glen Murakami.
The TEEN TITANS: TROUBLE IN TOKYO Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available in stores or from www.lalalandrecords.com on July 29, 2008.

No Robin for Nolan's Batman

First off, I caught the premiere of BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT at the midnight showing on Thursday. It required a coffee I.V. the following morning, but it was well worth it. The film is one of the best comic book movies ever made - far surpassing BATMAN BEGINS. Heath Ledger's performance is amazing; He does the impossible... he makes your forget Jack Nicholson by his second scene. The impressive cast - including Christain Bale, Heath Ledger, Michael Caine, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman - are all used to good effect. Everyone is intertwined in a well-thought plot full of twists and turns. The film is absolutely breathtaking.

Now, here's the other news. Don't expect to see Robin in any of the sequels! At least, as long as Bale and Nolan are concerned...

From moviesonline.com: "Christopher Nolan has made it clear that the new "Batman" film franchise will not bring Robin into the mythology as long as he is directing, apparently having stated that Robin is in a crib somewhere still and the timeline isn't appropriate for him to enter the picture. To some this may come as a relief. But, there are many Robin fans out there who believe Robin, particularly Dick Grayson, who grows up to become Nightwing, plays a pivotal role in the Dark Knight's tale. Though the Boy Wonder was introduced as a means to draw younger comic readers to "Batman" in the 1940s, Robin has become much more than a cheap gimmick or a mere sidekick as some continue to believe he is."

and from Starpulse.com: "Batman star Christian Bale has declared he will quit the comic book movie franchise if producers ever decide to reintroduce the caped crusader's sidekick Robin. Bale took on the role of the legendary action hero in 2005's Batman Begins and will be seen again in The Dark Knight, which is due for release later this month. However the actor is hoping that the character of Robin is not brought back into any of future Batman movies - because he will resign in protest. He says, "If Robin crops up in one of the new Batman films, I'll be chaining myself up somewhere and refusing to go to work.""

Liz Gehrlein On Titans Future

DC Nation: #122

Hello again, DC Nation! Shiny new editor Liz Gehrlein here – you've seen me around these parts before, making tie-in checklists and leading a zombie attack on Dan. It's all part of a day's work, really. And that's what I'm here to write about today – my day's work. I've just moved across the hall into my new office, hung up my Labyrinth poster, posed all my Beatles toys, unpacked the statues that Dan and Rachel gave me (Thanks, Dan! Thanks, Rachel!), and then the best part – taped up all the covers for my upcoming books.

See, I'm getting a whole new slate of monthlies to make up for having to leave the new weekly Trinity behind, and there's so much exciting stuff coming up in them that I don't even know where to start.

Well, how about with politics? (That's always a good icebreaker at parties, right?) Coming this fall is a four-issue miniseries called Decisions, written by Bill WillinghamJudd Winick with art by Rick Leonardi and Karl Story, in which an attempted political assassination sparks mystery, panic, indignation, patriotism, a media feeding frenzy, and an in-depth discussion of the superhero's place in the political arena. And since the very existence of the book has already sparked most of those things in our message boards, I'm hoping you guys decide that Decisions is worth a peek.

I'll also be working on Teen Titans and the upcoming mini Terror Titans with writer Sean McKeever, as well as no-adjective-necessary Titans with Judd Winick. And man, there is a lot going on with all types of Titans these days.

There's a new beastie in Teen Titans I can't wait for you to meet, and at the end of the year we're adding some team members to the roster – a nice blend of old and new. In Terror Titans, we'll catch up with Ravager (who seems ready to stop fighting the good fight and start fighting anyone she can) and the Clock King (who has plenty of uses for someone like Ravager). And over in Titans, we're not going to let those guys rest for a minute. Fresh from an encounter with Raven's extended family, the exhausted team will be forced to take on a new, but familiar foe. The resulting battle turns the Titans against each other and sparks mystery, panic, indignation…hey, wait a minute…

Anyway, I've got more projects coming down the pipe that I would love to tell you about, but I can't spill the beans on those just yet.

So, in conclusion, I'll say this: If a day of work means I get to look up Dante's definition of greed, ancient Libyan men's fashion, Freud's definition of the death drive, campaign finance laws, and a complete list of languages that begin with "C," plus, you know, read a bunch of comics?

That's not such a bad day.

Superboy Returns?

Could the Superboy name be available again, after being tied up in legal disputes?

Newsarama reports: As Newsarama readers have noted, DC Comics Executive Editor Dan DiDio made an offhand comment this weekend at Wizard World Chicago that has led some to wonder whether the Superboy lawsuit has been settled. Here’s the scoop from the “DCU Crisis” panel: "DiDio also paused to point out the special nature of Legion of Three Worlds. “We’ve got Geoff, we’ve got George, we’ve got SuperBOY Prime (yes, we can say that again).”

This could reasonably be taken as a sign that the Superboy lawsuit is over — after all, it was the Siegel family’s initially successful (but later vacated) attempt to reclaim the character that apparently led DC to take the name off the market.

However, DiDio’s reference to Superboy is not the only piece of evidence to emerge this weekend. On Friday, the Siegels and Time Warner filed their joint progress reportThis report states that the parties have not reached a settlement, despite four mediation sessions attended by their lawyers and DC President and Publisher Paul Levitz. in the Superboy and Superman lawsuits.
