40 Years of the Fab Five

They barely look over 23! Yet the original Teen Titans celebrate 40 years of crime-fighting bliss in 2005. It was back in 1965 that Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash and Wonder Girl joined together officially as the Teen Titans! Originally known as "the fab four" [after a certain famous musical foursome]-- the quartet became a quintet when Speedy was retroactively added as a member in 1978.

The titanstower.com gallery is getting a revamp, but here's a page I'm proud to share: Three generations of Teen Titans artists depicting the original five Teen Titans! Yep -- Nick Cardy, George Perez and Phil Jimenez -- all with their unique renditions of the characters from the eras they drew them. This section of my personal Titans sketch collection is probably the most meaningful. These are original drawings that have not been published anywhere! So raise a glass and toast Forty Years of the Fab Five! Here's to forty more!

You can really get an appreciation of how each character has grown over the years as each of the artists brings them to life. Nick shows them with the wide-eyed innocence of youth; ready to fight the good fight for truth and justice. George portrays them slightly older as they are ready to step out from the protective shadow of their mentors and blaze their own path. Finally Phil captures a darker more mature version. Jaded and scarred they no longer have the innocence of youth, but rather the determination of seasoned veterans. Each artist is truly a gifted gentleman whose talent brings these characters to life.

Yeah. I just love that page. It's one of my favs on the whole site. And, the nice thing, is that each artist is as nice as you'd want 'em to be. The Titans have been blessed!
