52: Dead Titans and Donna Troy

from
Newsarama: "While the story of the war will occur within the pages of 52, the publisher is also releasing four one-shots on the same day. [...] Now that 52 has passed the Week 47 mark, and the lines are pretty clearly drawn between the parties, we sat down with World War III writers Keith Champagne and John Ostrander to find out more about what readers can expect from the four special issues."

And we'll find out why Donna Troy will be acting as Wonder Woman. Keith Champagne says: "Desperate times call for heroic measures. Wonder Woman is a humanitarian and the world could really use some humanitarian aid during Week 50."

How do the Titans fare in Part Three: Hell for Heroes? John Ostrander says: "A Titans line-up is quickly pulled together in the face of Black Adam's assaults. They catch up with him up by the roof of the world -– in the Himalayas. They get chewed up real, real bad." The solicts mention that the Titans lose one of their own, to which Ostrander ominiously replied: "It says they only lose one?"

Myself, I'm wondering what the deal is with all the dead Titans lately. Lilith, Pantha, Baby Wildebeest, Bushido, Osiris, Superboy, almost Nightwing... and more to come? Plus the mystery grave in TEEN TITANS #47? Dan Didio, stop the madness!

I think writers see the Titans as cannon fodder. Many of the chcracters who have been Titans in the past do not have ties to any other heroes in the DCU, so that makes them expendable.
Killing a Titan is an easy way to increase the body-count of a story. Sometimes writers feel that a high body count equals high drama.

In the 80's, it was established that the Titans are the DC version of Marvel's X-men. There are some definite similarities, such as both teams having 5 founding members. The X-Men have lost many of their number over the years, so it's only natural the Titans experience the same.

Matt, where is it written that whither goest the X-Men, goeth the Titans? You think it's just keeping up with the Joneses? I don't think it's "only natural" at all. That kind of nonchalant attitude just gives writers an ease or carte blanche. Personally, I think it's too easy of a way out for writers / editors (or Dan DiDio). They should be more creative in resolving storylines than just killing a character off. It ticks me off that this practice of killing a character is used so often these days in the stories.

How come this plot line sound so familiar to the aftermath of Teen Titans by Superboy-prime. All of the Teen Titans band together to stop a maniac supercharacter run amock and get splatter. Can they get a better plot line than that. Where are the Outsider, JLA, Birds of Prey, JSA, Doom Patrol, Green Lantern Corp, Metal men, LOS or SS. Hech bring out the Zoocrew too. DC Stop using Teen Titans as a bloody doormat.

I agree with you anonymous. I think that DC Comics think that the Teen Titans are just little superhero wimps. Well, they are like the best in the league right now! Always have been, always will be. Plus, DC CAN'T say that the new version of the Flash is more popular than Teen Titans. Do you know what I'm saying?

The new version of the flash IS a titan for gods sake.
Once a titan always a titan and all that.
But yeah, the titans seem to be having it a bit rough atm.
    Killing off Batman anyone?
