Dan Didio on Editing Teen Titans

Newsarama has just posted an interview with Dan Didio on Teen Titans.

Yesterday, we spoke with Teen Titans writer Sean McKeever about the series, the team, and the upcoming threat of the Terror Titans. McKeever also mentioned that, so far, things are going swimmingly with the series’ new editor – a guy named Dan DiDio, who also happens to be Senior VP-Executive Editor of the DC Universe.

NRAMA: From your point of view, in terms of your story and guiding the book, how does a new series running in parallel impact what you’re doing?

DD: It doesn’t impact us at all. That particular book will have its own style, tone and characters. The good part about the Teen Titans book is that we have a series of characters in here that only appear here, as I mentioned. Nothing against the Titans book, but Nighwing has his own series, Starfire is appearing in a miniseries now, Cyborg and Raven will also have their own miniseries shortly. Everybody there is seen in other places. Not that it lessens that book any, but that’s not what we’ve got with Teen Titans. If you want to see this version of the Titans with, say, Ravager and Miss Martian, this is where you’ve got to be.

NRAMA: Okay – to take a look at the big picture Mr. editor – what does a Teen Titans story have to have in it to make it a good “Teen Titans” story?

DD: What we’re really trying to do right now, actually is try to establish every character in their own right, and figure out what role they serve,. Not only in regards to the team, but also in regards to the greater superhero community. What is the purpose of the Teen Titans versus any other team? This book and team should really have a different point of view and tonality.

Didio is the guy who wanted to kill Nightwing, but settled for Superboy . . . and now he is editing Titans. Oh well at least I don't have to worry about un-subscribing, they will all be dead soon.

I hate being so negative! The Titans are coming back, this should be a good time for Titans fans, but with Winick’s writing and now Didio editing I’m not feeling too excited about these books and it makes me hesitant to spend my money on them.

I have been a little disappointed in Teen Titans since OYL too, the new characters bring some good angst to the team, but the dynamic that grew out of Young Justice between Robin, Superboy, Impulse, and Wondergirl was the strength of that book, and now the title seems to be floundering.

The biggest mistake was saving nightwing for superboy! I am willing to give the new team a try. I would really like to see character development for Miss Martian and Rose.
As for Titans, with Winnick at the pen we will most likely see it become his usual sex fest. With stories based more around who is sleeping with whom than about being heroes.

"New Earth" is Didio Comics, not DC. Not the one any of us knew. When OYL started I renewed my subscription because of Rose. My mistake. World War 3 taught me the error of my ways, and the end of all hope at least so long as Didio is in charge. Seven issues left before my subscription runs out, and then I leave DC behind for good, so long as the Didio Error--I mean, Era--continues.

Congrats, Didio. Screwed up as the 90s were, they were a walk in the park compared to you!

It's not Superboy instead of Nightwing, folks. Had the writers not intervened, it would have been Superboy *and* Nightwing. Superboy lost no matter how you slice it.

And he got rid of Supergirl from the Teen Titans for the stupidest reason - "Cassie used Kara to feel better". WTF?

They just ruined all the work put into the friendship between the two. If they wanted Kara off the team, they didn't have to break up the friendship.
