Ian Churchill's Unused Titans Designs


Just in case you thought the recent TITANS relaunch couldn't have been any worse.... Here's some unused costume designs from Ian Churchill. You can purchase the sketches over at Artist's Choice, by the way.

Dove's redesign is the best of the three. Her hair looks cool. I don't mind her hot pants/high boots combo. But it's needlessly busy with all those strange capsules around her torso. Definitely not an improvement over her old costume.

Cyborg's redesign isn't terrible, but again, it looks needlessly complicated. Definitely not an improvement. And he sorta looks like an action figure whose outer costume has been removed. Mike McKone's redesign was a good update from Perez's outdated original. Just stick with that.

Donna's costume is the worst of the three. Just when you thought nothing could be uglier or busier than Donna' original Troia costume.... we get this. Phil Jimenez has given us two elegantly simple costumes for Donna, referencing both her Wonder Girl roots and ties to New Chronus. There's just no need to mess with that. This attempt at a redesign looks like a drag queen Wonder Woman. And the boob window is just not appropriate for Donna. Kory? sure. Donna? not so much.

So what do you guys think?

    sadly, they all are pretty lame. Dove's is the best of the three, but still begs the question, "Why?"

    All costume redesigns need to be left to Project : Rooftop.

    I like dove's wings better, but that's about it.

    Cyborge's is really bad. I remember Wizard (I think) had a updated look for him that used the Silver and Gold in a cool way. My favorite is the post Titans Hunt look. Not the no brain character he was at the time just the War Machine esk look.

    Finally Donna's looks like an alternate reality Wonder Woman, but still not right for Donna. I also like Phil Jimenez look the best for her.

    Quick question: I keep seeing Donna with a lasso, what does her lasso do? Is it just a replication of Wonder Womans? Just a lasso? Is there any sort of story behind it? It just baffles me.

    Good gods, they're ALL horrible. They look like bad designs for some fourth-rate, over-designed mid-90s IMAGE book. GAH!

    I'm not big on his art, anyway, but he obviously has NO design skills whatsoever.

    And I firmly agree with everyone else, don't mess with Phil's design for Donna. It's simple, elegant and very "her."

    I like Cyborg's design. He still looks too clunky for '09 in the comics, and he should be more streamlined. I think this redesign is a step in the right direction, albeit it looks like he's been assimilated by an Ipod

    If this costume was seriously considered, it might explain why Dove threw herself in front of the Sons of Trigon's blasts in the Titans East Special.

    Worst Donna Troy costume ever. Ever.

    I'm not as hard on Ian as everyone else is, even though only a coulpe of these redesigns actually work. Everyone is usually, "BOOO--90's!!", but I'd rather he continue drawing like this than to join the light-table brigade ("LOOK--it's Tommy Lee Jones wearing fingerwaves!")

    Way too many O's in Donna's costume for it to be a coincidence. Were they considering a name change?
