SDCC 2009: Titans, JLA and Teen Titans

Big Titans News from the DC Universe Panel. Dick Grayson Batman and Donna Troy join the Justice League. (One of those silhouettes on the cover also looks suspiciously like Starfire). Kid Flash gets hs own series. Deathstroke becomes the new team leader in TITANS. And plans are afoot for TEEN TITANS.

DC Universe Panel, as reported by CBR:

-- "Johns promised a new speedster coming out of "Flash: Rebirth" and running right into the "Blackest Night: Flash" series he's doing with Scott Kollins. And once "Blackest Night" ends, Johns will be writing a Flash monthly book. Johns later said that he wanted to do the same thing with the Flash franchise he did with Green Lantern. It's his favorite character, and to build the franchise Sterling Gates will come on to write "Kid Flash.""

-- "Art was shown for Robinson's upcoming run on "Justice League America" with artist Mark Bagley. A new lineup was teased of which Robinson said, "At the moment, I don't think the team is everything it should be. I want to make the team great again." With "Cry For Justice" taking place just before "Blackest Night," Robinson's run starts proper with "Justice League of America" #38 including two issues tying into "Blackest Night." "You're going to see a character I believe can be great...female Dr. Light against Black Lantern evil Dr. Light," the writer teased, adding that the new team will feature Mon-El in a new Superman-inspired costume, Dick Grayson as Batman and Donna Troy who "I'm going to make her kick ass in this book.""

-- "
When a fan asked for Johns to come back onto "Teen Titans" and work to "fix" the franchise, the writer said that Superboy, Kid Flash, Tim Drake and Wonder Girl will all appear in the first arc of "Adventure Comics" and that he had spoken with the new writers taking over both that series and "Titans" saying, "They're going to be really, really good books." Deathstroke will become the leader of the Titans team when Wallace writes "Titans" later this year."

DC Universe Panel, as reported by Newsarama:

-- On the JLA team: "
The team will have: Mon-El (in a new costume with a Superman "S" on it), Dick Grayson Batman, Donna Troy and Hal Jordan. The other characters are a "mystery," says Robinson."

-- "
Eric Wallace has joined the panel, talking about Titans. "We're going to have a new leader for the Titans, someone that you might be familiar with, by the name of Deathstroke: The Terminator," Wallace informs. Some brief talk about Teen Titans preceded the Titans dicsussion."

-- "
Johns says "I want to do the same thing with Flash that we've done with Green Lantern," adding that he's going to be doing Flash, and Sterling Gates will be writing Kid Flash. They'll be writing in close contact with each other, a la Johns on Green Lantern and Peter J. Tomasi on Green Lantern Corps."

-- "
Fan: "Ever since Geoff has left Teen Titans, that book has been a mess. Please come back to Teen Titans." Johns said that Bart, Conner, Tim and Cassie will be in the first arc of Adventure Comics."

-- "
Wallace pointed out that Felicia D. Henderson, new writer of Teen Titans, was in the audience, and that fans should be excited for her plans. Johns added, "I can't wait to read Titans and Teen Titans.""

Not sure what to think about Deathstroke in the Titans...feels somewhat desperate. LOVE the idea of three former Titans (maybe more) graduating to the JLA. Robinson will treat these characters with respect.

Didn't we get promised better Titans books during the last two SDCC? And if memory serves the books have been at an all time low in terms of book sales...

The idea of Deathstroke does seem like a desperate twist. Particularly since Slade has becomes such a more horrible villain over the years. Before he was an assassin with a code. Lately... well lets see... He helped destroy Bludhaven and commit mass murder, used drugs to mind control Batgirl and Ravager, played puppet master with not only his kids, but also three groups of Titans all to help his kids feel accepted (they both left the teams and went evil or rogue)... After all the atrocities and death he's caused... why exactly would anyone want him to lead the Titans? I could understand a NEW team, but why would the current team?

The idea of Donna and Dick moving to the JLA sounds good. And I'm looking forward to Action Comics too.

It's Titans and Teen Titans I'm growing more and more tired of.

Agreed. Pretty sad that the core books is really the worst way to follow the characters many fans have come to care about. I don't believe Deathstroke can be redeemed but maybe that isn't the point. We'll see. I'm a sucker for my teams... hell, I'm from KC, we are used to having our heart broken by teams we love. Why should this be any different? I'll blindly buy any book with Titans on the cover and hope someday DC will get it right.

Deathstroke leading the Titans? Seems..random, to say the least. I am honestly so sick of the sh*tty writing going on with the Titans. They're great characters, and to see them done in such a horrible manner just pisses me off. I would love to hear what Marv Wolfman thinks on this subject, if he hasn't voiced his opinion already. Reading his characters used in such a way must make his eyes bleed. It does mine.

Well, adding to my above comment, a correction: some of the characters are of Marv's creation, not all. Sorry bout that.

What again was the point of restarting this comic? I thought the idea was hey everyone loved the old Titan comic and the cartoon was hugely popular why not restart the old series and try to win back fans. Instead they spent 2 years spinning around with no story ideas, creative team or writer. Now they are removing the very character presumably people want to see together again. At this point it's almost like DC has no clue what it's doing... oh wait that's DC standard operating procedure. Oh well cancellation isn't that far ahead.

Marv/Perez created pretty much all the characters. Those they didn't create they basically created their current personalities, as the silver age kids tended to all be 1-D sans maybe Speedy. I imagine Marv hasn't been overjoyed with the Titan comic line since DC execs convinced him to do the Titan hunt story arc then bailed on him after the story proved to be hugely unpopular and sales imploded.

It would be nice if they were redeeming Deathstroke but I wouldn't hold my breath, since Didio was the one so in love with making him such an uber villain in the first place. In fairness to the Titans books themselves, I think the whole Dick-as-Batman helped throw a wrench in their plans. Not that such excuses mucking up the team wholesale, of course.

Also, don't be so hot to comisserate with Marv Wolfman. It wasn't that long ago that he helped tear Jericho's eyes out. These days I think he's just phoning it in for the paycheck. Elsewise, wouldn't he have a thing or two to say about a cetain character in Blackest Night, hmmm?

It seem like they are reharshing the same old tune again. Terminator once lead the Titans a short while ago.....Dint do that much for rating. Death Stroke have always worked best as a mainstream villians. What next resurect the classic Terra and grow a set of eyes for Jericho!!!
    SAD.

If you read the stuff here on the Titan tower website, it's pretty clear Marv washed his hands of the Titans long ago. That was the funniest part of the whole Blog post from Marv on the story arc to me. Here is Marv writing for DC and he comes back from vacation and finds out by surprise what is going on in the story he apparently is helping to write. Pretty much tells you how DC is run these days.

As for Deathstroke: he was basically redeemed like 20 years ago, so not much new ground here.

I agree on the Nightwing to Batman story. It's pretty clear there were competing ideas floating around DC and we see who's idea won. For the life of me I can't understand why with the huge Batman hit movie running in the theaters and all the Oscar hype, DC chose that time to remove Batman from his comic books.

Umm... the movie has been out of theaters for over a year, and the Oscars are over... I'm not sure what that has to do with the comics.

DC decided to remove Batman from the books to try something that was actually DIFFERENT. I mean, lets be frank, these books haven't really had much in terms of a shake-up in a while. And if you look at most forums and sales for the new BATMAN REBORN books, sales are at an all-time high. We all know Bruce will come back, so its not like its a huge deal if he's gone from the books for a year or two.

The idea of Dick being the new Batman is an interesting twist if you ask me. I haven't been this exciting for a Batman book in years.

And I don't think Dick becoming Batman did anything wrong to the Titans book. That series was weak LONG before the R.I.P. started. Removing Dick from the book, only saved him from the stink of the series.

Okay, I know this is off topic but I wasn't sure where to submit. I heard today from a strong source that Games Graphic Novel is on. The DC is going to release for next year which would be the 30 anniversary of the Wolfman/Perez run. Can someone confirm this? If this is true then I'm seriously hoping the Judas Contract DVD gets done.

    Hi there!
I would like to burn a theme at here. There is such a nicey, called HYIP, or High Yield Investment Program. It reminds of financial piramyde, but in rare cases one may happen to meet a company that really pays up to 2% daily not on invested money, but from real profits.

For several years , I earn money with the help of these programs.
I don't have problems with money now, but there are heights that must be conquered . I make 2G daily, and I started with funny 500 bucks.
Right now, I'm very close at catching at last a guaranteed variant to make a sharp rise . Turn to my blog to get additional info.
