Dan Didio on Editing Teen Titans

Newsarama has just posted an interview with Dan Didio on Teen Titans.

Yesterday, we spoke with Teen Titans writer Sean McKeever about the series, the team, and the upcoming threat of the Terror Titans. McKeever also mentioned that, so far, things are going swimmingly with the series’ new editor – a guy named Dan DiDio, who also happens to be Senior VP-Executive Editor of the DC Universe.

NRAMA: From your point of view, in terms of your story and guiding the book, how does a new series running in parallel impact what you’re doing?

DD: It doesn’t impact us at all. That particular book will have its own style, tone and characters. The good part about the Teen Titans book is that we have a series of characters in here that only appear here, as I mentioned. Nothing against the Titans book, but Nighwing has his own series, Starfire is appearing in a miniseries now, Cyborg and Raven will also have their own miniseries shortly. Everybody there is seen in other places. Not that it lessens that book any, but that’s not what we’ve got with Teen Titans. If you want to see this version of the Titans with, say, Ravager and Miss Martian, this is where you’ve got to be.

NRAMA: Okay – to take a look at the big picture Mr. editor – what does a Teen Titans story have to have in it to make it a good “Teen Titans” story?

DD: What we’re really trying to do right now, actually is try to establish every character in their own right, and figure out what role they serve,. Not only in regards to the team, but also in regards to the greater superhero community. What is the purpose of the Teen Titans versus any other team? This book and team should really have a different point of view and tonality.

Who Are The Terror Titans?

Sean McKeever provides some answers at Newsarama:

NRAMA: You said that they have a new, refocused outlook. Can you tell us anything about what that is?

SM: It's not so much a new outlook, but more of a focusing of what the Teen Titans are about. It's more than just being teen superheroes and it's more than just hanging out on the weekends. There's a greater civic purpose, and we'll get into that in issue #55.

NRAMA: What can you tell us about this storyline?

SM: Issue #55 is a prelude for what's to come. And what's to come is a new version of Clock King, who is in charge of a new team of teen legacy villains called the Terror Titans. And what follows after issue #55 is the Terror Titans taking it to the Teen Titans.

Teen Titans: Year One Flip Out

The adorbale TEEN TITANS YEAR ONE #1 featured Wonder Girl's first trip to the big city! There, she sees a billboard of the Flips! Remember them?

no? Well here's the original story of the Flips.

I love that Karl Kerschl remembered them!

Teen Titans: Year One (Old School)

I loved the first issue of Teen Titans: Year One. If you haven't checked it out, there's some previous scans here at scans daily:

The 5-page preview

and Robin Making a Shocking Discovery (spoilers to #1)

What shocked me is how many fans aren't familiar with the Teen Titans origin story! How did they all gather together? It was detailed in a case file in TEEN TITANS #53 [1978]. This issue told the flashback how the group first gathered... and revealed Speedy was a founding meember after all! (one of the very first ret-cons, kiddies...)

Once you see the original story, you'll see how closely TEEN TITANS: YEAR ONE #1 aligns with that tale -

Check out the Original Year One story here! (30 year old spoilers within...)

I urge everyone to run out and buy TEEN TITANS: YEAR ONE #1! It's full of the awesome and the creative team has outdone themselves! The art alone will blow you away.
