Amy Wolfram Talks Year One

Newsarama reports: "You probably haven’t read any of Amy Wolfram’s work…but most comic fans have probably seen it. Wolfram, who served as a writer and story editor on the Cartoon Networks’s Teen Titans animated series, makes the leap to print this January with DC’s Teen Titans: Year One, a look back at the original incarnation of one of DC’s most enduring super-teams written by Wolfram and illustrated by Karl Kerschl. Wolfram gave us the scoop on what to expect from her comics debut, and what it’s been like going from the animated Titans to their comic book inspirations."

Tell us about Teen Titans: Year One. Is this a retelling or a "fill in the blank" type scenario for the Titans' first year? What are some of the themes of your storyline, and some of the major events it covers?

AW: It’s a retelling, but also an updating for this generation’s readers. The basic theme is teenagers coming out of the shadow of their mentors and coming into their own, so we’ll have a lot of firsts, like the first time being away from home, first dates,… all those awkward, painful moments!

NRAMA: Who are some of the characters that will appear in the story, and what stage of their lives are they at when we meet them? In particular, how are they defined by their relationships with their mentors?

AW: We’ll be seeing Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Wonder Girl, and Speedy. They’re all teenagers who’ve spent most of their lives learning from their mentors, and now it’s time for them to prove themselves. And each character has a different relationship, close, not so close, fatherly, not so fatherly. It’s only being around others do they start realizing that not everyone has the same relationships. It’s like the first time you eat dinner at someone’s house and you think “we never have fish on Fridays, why don’t we have fish on Friday?”

Can't wait.
Also, Speedy is officially confirmed in the mini, so I hope everyone's happy! :)

Exploring Teen Titans Year One

The Big Three of DC Universe sidekick lore are back and they're bringing a pocket-sized princess along for the ride as veteran TV writer Amy Wolfram ("Teen Titans") and rising star artist Karl Kerschl ("All-Flash," "Robin") are set to re-imagine the Teen Titans in January with the six-issue miniseries "Teen Titans: Year One."

"We are definitely going back to the old school Teen Titans," Amy Wolfram told CBR News. "It's directly re-imagined from the old Nick Cardy book," added Karl Kerschl.

"Everything we are doing for the first series is directly out of Teen Titans continuity," Kerschl teased. I don't know what else to say. I don't want to spoil anything. They definitely have a history with the villain. It will feel very new and different to people but at the same time, we are changing almost nothing. The costumes are all the same. The locations are pretty much the same. The situations are all the same, we are just spinning it in a different way. Some of those origin stories were kind of rushed. This re-tells it with a focus on the kids and their perspective on it. And how they are feeling and how they deal with stuff. It's the same story. It will be surprising and comfortable at the same time. What we are doing, if anything, is giving their origins more space to breathe."

For those who are concerned, Speedy will be in the mini although he isn't mentioned in the interview. Can't wait!

Teen Titans: Year One Preview Coming!

Karl Kerschl's blog teases us: "So for all of you folks who actually care about the comics I’m working on, I’ve got a treat for you! Or rather, I’ll have a treat for you very soon, because DC is running the first three pages of Teen Titans Year One in the next Previews catalogue, and as soon as that happens I’ll run them here as well (and maybe some extra stuff too). I can’t wait for this thing to come out so it’ll finally feel real. Right now it just feels like a child I’ve been home-schooling and smothering with the attention of an overzealous parent…

Anyway, it comes out in January. And I realize that Kid Flash’s costume is still wrong in the solicitation image, but it’s in the process of being fixed. I swear."

Words cannot describe how much I am looking forward to this mini. I've seen some of the art - it will knock your socks off. And "yeah" to Karl for fixing Wally's costume!
